Formalizing a multi-generational giving strategy rooted in shared values
A prominent family foundation with three generations of active members faced a critical inflection point. The founding generation's informal giving approach — guided by personal relationships and intuition — had served the family well for decades. But as the family grew, so did the complexity. Younger members brought new priorities and perspectives. Disagreements about grant-making criteria were becoming more frequent. Without a formalized process, the foundation risked fracturing along generational lines, potentially undermining both family unity and philanthropic impact.
We began with a comprehensive listening phase, conducting one-on-one interviews with every family member involved in the foundation. These conversations revealed not just differing priorities, but a shared desire to honor the founding generation's legacy while evolving the foundation's mission.
Drawing on these insights, we facilitated a series of structured family retreats designed to surface shared values and translate them into a coherent giving framework. We introduced a values-mapping exercise that helped the family identify five core principles that would guide all future grant-making decisions.
We then architected a governance structure that balanced generational representation with operational efficiency — including a rotating board chair, an advisory council for next-generation members, and a clear decision-making protocol that ensured every voice was heard without creating gridlock.
Finally, we developed a comprehensive giving framework complete with evaluation criteria, impact measurement tools, and an annual review process that would keep the foundation accountable to its stated mission.
"Barakah Group didn't just give us a strategy — they gave us a language for talking about what matters most to our family. For the first time in years, we're all rowing in the same direction."
